I Have Become My Mother - Part 3

I've written two posts in the past explaining two different ways I've become my mother. You can read about them here. Well, just last week I did something with a tissue box that is EXACTLY what my mother does. She will get pretty tissue boxes, Christmas decorated boxes for example, and when the tissues run out, she will just refill the tissue box instead of buying a new one. Not to save money or anything like that, but because she likes the tissue box she has.

Well, I guess I'm partial to my tissue boxes, too, because I did this exact same thing last week. I'm finally getting around to decorating my guest bathroom and I really like the tissue box I have in there. It matches the décor and it's "kiddy-themed." I was really bummed when I ran out of tissues because I didn't know if I'd be able to find that same box again. And I really liked it. I looked at the store, but couldn't find that same box or any cute boxes like it. So I disgustingly bought a new plain box of tissues that I figured I would just make due with. I was really bummed about this! I didn't want the plain tissue box in the bathroom, I wanted the pretty, kiddy-themed, décor-matching tissue box I used to have. (I know, such a tortured life I live.)

When it came time to switch the empty box with the new box, I just couldn't do it. I thought about it for a while, and decided to just go for it and do what my mom does. So, I opened up the "ugly" tissue box, took out the tissues, very carefully opened the pretty tissue box, placed the tissues in the box, and taped the box up. It looks so pretty and I'm sure will make anyone's experience with blowing their nose in the bathroom much more enjoyable. :)

A New House

I had some fun last week making a playhouse for Lucy out of her carseat box. I've had the box saved since the beginning of January and have been thinking about making this house since then. I finally just made myself do it last week and am so proud of it! Here it is:

The front door opens for her to go inside.

The purple border is purple duct tape!

These windows open and close.

I think this is my favorite side. I love the construction paper flowers and I even put curtains on the windows!

Got the idea from my Mom to put contact paper on the inside. Polka dot contact paper!

Lucy was a little unsure of the house and I kind of had to place her in it. She didn't stay in it very long, so we will work on it!

I braced myself the whole time I was working on it for the fact that Lucy might not like it that much, but I hadn't really prepared myself for the fact that she would tear it up! I guess she just does not like the flowers and grass, per the video below! I laughed the whole time she was doing this, because it's funny! I did, though, put the house up out of her reach because she did this right after I finished working on it and I just couldn't bear seeing it torn apart anymore so soon! We'll get it out again here and there and try to get her to play with it instead of tear it up!

My Mom Is A Real Person

I've realized a lot of things in my short nine months of being a mom. One of them is the fact that my mom is a "real person" and always has been, even when I was growing up. Let me explain........

Ross and I have decided we are going to trade my car in for a minivan. My car is a great car, but we would like a little more space now with having a baby, and planning ahead for another baby or two or three (haha) in the future. We've looked at a few minivans along with some crossover SUVs and have decided it makes the most sense to buy a minivan. Minivans just have more room and we feel like we get more bang for our buck going that route as opposed to an SUV. Although minivans have changed a lot since they first came out and are a little less "minivan looking" and have a lot of nice features, neither one of us are super excited about driving a minivan. I don't know if I can explain just exactly what my hang-up is with having a minivan. I don't think I'm feeling like I'll be uncool driving a minivan because I don't really care about that. I guess it's just that it seems so big to drive. Like I will be little me in the front seat with this big old backend behind me. And I really like my car that I have now. It's funny because I kind of didn't like it when I got it and called it my old lady car. You can read about that here.

But back to the point of this post. I was telling my mom that we decided to go the minivan route and tried to explain why I'm not super excited to drive a minivan. She said she felt the same way when they got a minivan when we were growing up. We were in elementary school when my parents switched from a car to a minivan. I think we had 2 minivans while growing up and they were both Ford Aerostars. Her saying this to me was funny because I don't remember her saying anything about having the van when we were little and at that time I certainly wouldn't have thought about her not liking the van.

It was just a big realization to me that my mom actually is a person! She's experienced the same things I am now experiencing as a mom. She rocked me, fed me, bathed me, and played with me just like I'm doing with Lucy. She got frustrated with me when I wouldn't sleep, just like I do with Lucy. She felt so bad for me when I was sick or hurt myself, just like I do with Lucy. She loved me so much, just like I love Lucy. She wasn't so excited about driving a minivan, just as I'm not!

And there's lots of time when Ross and I make fun of Lucy (not in a mean way, you just have to understand our humor :) ) or we just roll our eyes when we can tell she's throwing a fit about something. My parents probably did the same to me when I was growing up, but I had no clue about it then! It's just funny to me that I'm now a parent. I remember thinking this when I got married - thinking that I don't get married, other people get married! Now I feel like I'm not a parent, other people have kids, not me. :)

A New Job

I have a new job now - teaching aerobics classes at Chesterfield Family Center. My class is called "Total Body Blitz" and is on MWF from 9-10am. I started teaching this class mid-December and am slowly working up an attendance base. It's great because the gym is literally three minutes from our house and I can put Lucy in the daycare area there (for free) during my class. I'm enjoying this class so much. It's a good mix of a cardio workout and a toning workout with weights. I usually have 2-5 people on Mondays and Wednesdays and about 10 people on Fridays.

It's nice to have a job again and get a paycheck! It's certainly not a paycheck like I was used to working fulltime, but it makes me feel good to contribute something to our finances. It's hard to believe I've been teaching aerobics classes now for almost 13 years! My mom and I were talking about my class and she asked if I ever would have thought that when I started teaching in 2001 that it would last this long and turn into my job later on in life. Funny how things work out! And it really is the best job...I get paid to workout!
