A Growing Belly and Shrinking Time

I am 32 weeks pregnant now which means we have less than 8 weeks before we meet Molly! I'm feeling good, just get tired easily and have lots of nasty heartburn. I will definitely not miss that once she's born. We are starting to get her room ready with painting and moving furniture around. I've gone through Lucy's 0-6 month clothes to see what Molly can use. It was fun going through Lucy's clothes - I loved some of them so much and will be fun to use again! I do need to get some size 0-3 month long-sleeve clothes, though. Here's my belly!

Christmas Potpourri...Again

I posted this last year but it's too good not to share again!

Last year I came across a stovetop potpourri recipe on Pinterest that is just perfect for the Christmas season. You can find the original blog post here.

Here's the recipe:

1 whole orange
1/2 c cranberries
1 Tbsp whole cloves
3 cinnamon sticks

Quarter the orange and place the orange (or just the orange peel) along with the other ingredients in a small saucepan. Fill the pan with water. Place the pan on the smallest burner on the lowest setting. Refill with water as needed. Enjoy!

This is a really great recipe that smells up the house so nicely. It makes a great gift, too. Last year and this year I got all the ingredients together, along with a recipe card, and put them in a little bag to give as gifts. I've enjoyed having this burning in my house the past week. It smells so yummy! Hope you can enjoy it, too.

Molly

Last week I had a "level 2" ultrasound that would take a more in-depth look at Molly's kidneys. At my 19-week ultrasound, the doctor found her kidneys to be a little larger than normal for that age. He ordered a second ultrasound at week 27 to check the kidneys again and this one still showed them being larger than normal. He wasn't too concerned about it because the amniotic fluid and everything else about the baby and my pregnancy was normal. But, he wanted to make sure so ordered the level 2 ultrasound for us.

I was a bit worried about this, especially after I googled it and found all sorts of possible answers to what was wrong with her kidneys. (Note to self: NEVER google anything like that! Just wait to hear the results from the professionals!) I was very nervous about the ultrasound and what it might result in, but was also excited about it, thinking we might get a 3-d look at our little baby. As you can see by the picture below, we did get a 3-d look at her. Isn't she just the cutest! It is so neat to see her face like this before she's born.

The doctor reviewed the ultrasound results and found that there is nothing wrong with her kidneys, they're just larger than other babies at this age. So thankful for that answer! She did tell me that my problem is I'm too thin, making everything about the baby easily seen. I guess that's an okay problem to have during pregnancy!

Nativity

I've wanted a nativity set for the past few years but haven't found one I liked enough to buy. I have lots of Christmas decorations but have realized I don't have a nativity set and really wanted one, since, you know, it is the whole reason for the season!

I've looked at some places online and Hobby Lobby, but just couldn't find any I liked. They all looked too fancy or old for me. I have always loved the Willow Tree brand nativity set, but it was a bit pricey and I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on it...until this year! I splurged and used birthday money and babysitting money I've received this semester and bought my very own Willow Tree nativity set. I love it! I have it on our mantel along with two candles and have used burlap as the background.

Parenting Fail

I've blogged about my Mommy Fail before (which as I type out the word Fail as a singular word I laugh to myself, realizing it should definitely be a plural word with several posts of that title), but  today I have a parenting fail to blog about.

Our second baby, Molly Mae, is due February 19, 2015. Our plan has been to have Molly sleep in a bassinet next to my bed for at least the first month. After that we would move her to a crib, which would be the crib that Lucy is currently sleeping in. By the time Molly is to be born, our plan was to have Lucy sleeping in a "big girl" twin size bed. We'd planned on moving Lucy into the twin size bed at the first of January, but after talking with Lucy's doctor about this at her 18-month checkup, the doctor said we should start transitioning her now. She said it's not good to make big changes like that two months before or two months after a new baby is born.

I came up with the idea to take the front side of Lucy's crib off so it would be kind of like a big girl a bed to help her get ready for the twin size bed. We never really set a specific date for this change, but a few weeks ago I tweaked my back a bit and it was very hard for me to get Lucy in and out of the crib. We took the crib front off that night so it would be easier for me to put her in bed and also because we needed to do it sometime.

If we only knew then what we know now.............

Lucy is a really good sleeper and she's also really good at just playing in her bed. Our bedtime routine is to take a bath, play a little in her room, I'll sit with her and read books while she drinks milk, and then after about 15-20 minutes she gets a bit restless and I put her in the crib. She will usually play in her crib for about 20-30 minutes - playing with her animals, talking to herself, and lately jumping up and down in her crib. We hear all of this through the baby monitor and it is quite entertaining at times!

With the front of the crib off, Lucy had no problem going in her crib, but she did have a problem staying in her crib! I'll spare you the details of the last few nights and nap times, but perhaps you can see why we were frustrated, worried, confused, clueless, etc., on how to make her stay in bed by the following pictures:

There's no Lucy in this picture because this was from Saturday after her "nap." She never fell asleep for a nap that afternoon and when we decided to just "get her up" she met us at the door and scurried out. It was funny, but frustrating and disappointing because she tore apart her whole room!

These pictures were taken between Wednesday night before Ross and I went to bed through Monday morning when we woke up. Some were from nap time and some were from bed time. They are quite funny just looking at them, but I felt so bad when I saw her sleeping on the floor! There were two nights when she came into our room and we had to bring her back into hers. And putting Lucy to bed Sunday night was awful! Ross and I decided to just sit with her in front of her bed, trying to keep her in bed, until she fell asleep. We did this together from 8-9:20pm, and then Ross left to study for a test and I sat with her from 9:20-10pm when she finally fell asleep! I was a bit deflated by this, wondering how we were going to ever get her to stay in her bed alone!

That Monday morning I was telling some friends about our experience with the front of the crib off and why we were doing this. I'm so glad I told this story because one of the girls gave me some great advice on what to do: keep her in the crib! She said Lucy is too young to understand she has to stay in her crib and to not grow her up too fast. What she said really sank into me and I totally agreed. Especially the part about growing her up too fast! I called Ross and told him about this and that perhaps we should just buy a new crib instead of a new twin size bed and he totally agreed. I was so thankful for that and felt SO relieved that we had a new plan of keeping her in a crib for now.

So now our plan is to buy a second crib instead of a twin size bed and I'm just fine with that. I had planned on doing white furniture in Lucy's room, so I plan on buying a white crib. I'm using a white dresser that my Dad made years ago for Stephanie and I. I'm really excited to get Lucy's "new room" decorated and all ready for her!

Our "First" Thanksgiving

This year Ross and I celebrated our fifth Thanksgiving together, but in some ways it was like our first Thanksgiving because we hosted my family and made the turkey! Since we've been married, we've gone to Kanas City to have dinner with Ross' family for Thanksgiving. This year we decided to stay home and we invited my family to our house for dinner. My parents had planned on coming and my sister and her family decided to come that day, too, so we had eight people for dinner. Well, nine if you include Lucy. :)

Neither of us had ever made a turkey before and I was excited to do so, but a bit intimidated by it. I've always thought it to be a long process and was afraid something might go wrong...the turkey wouldn't have been thawed completely when it came time to bake, it would have been over- or under-baked, making it take forever to be done or be completely dry that it did not taste good at all. I'm happy to report that none of those worries came true and we served a very delicious and juicy turkey!

I bought our 10-pound turkey Monday afternoon and put it in the refrigerator to thaw. I probably should have bought it Sunday to have more thawing time, but it turned out okay. We decided to put it in a brine and I used the Pioneer Woman's turkey brine recipe. It consisted of water, apple cider, brown sugar, salt, orange peel, pepper, and a few other seasonings. The turkey was still a tiny bit frozen Wednesday night when we put it in the brine, but figured it would be okay and continue thawing overnight while in the brine.

We got the turkey out Thursday around 12:30, washed it off and let it soak a bit, and put it in the oven. We followed the Pioneer Woman's Roasted Turkey recipe for baking it and were very pleased with the outcome. We had to keep an eye on the turkey, checking the temperature and smearing it with a butter mixture every half hour after the first hour and a half, and before we knew it, the turkey was ready to come out of the oven. We let it set for a bit and then Ross carved it while my Mom, sister, and I were getting all of the sides ready. We had turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes, and rolls for dinner. It was all so good! Perhaps I'm a bit biased, but I think this turkey was the best I've ever had. I'm not a huge fan of Thanksgiving turkey because it usually seems to be a bit dry, but our turkey was so good and juicy. I am very proud of Ross and I for the excellent Thanksgiving dinner we made!

Our Advent Calendar

For the past few years I have wanted to get an advent calendar for the Christmas season, but haven't found one I liked. I thought this would be something fun to do with our kids now. We had one when growing up and I remember enjoying looking at it each day. I also remember that one year my parents had an advent book where we were supposed to read a page from it each day during December. I think we tried doing this in the mornings before school and I don't think that went over very well - too busy in the mornings!

Anyway, I couldn't find a calendar I liked to buy so decided to try and make one. I searched Pinterest and found several advent calendars that looked fairly easy to make and very neat, too. I didn't want something too big and wanted something that would be interactive and easy for kids to use. I am quite pleased with the one I settled on and proud of the way it turned out.

Each tin has a Bible verse in it to read for the advent season so the idea is to open the tin that corresponds with the day in December and read the verse. I plan on adding a few pieces of candy or a note listing something fun to do for the day in the tin, too. Here's a picture of the final product, made using scrapbook paper, 2" party favor tins, a 12x12 shadow box and frame, Velcro, number stickers, and spray adhesive. (Sorry the picture is turned sideways. I can't figure out how to turn pictures on here.)

You can click here to see the original blog post I got the idea from. I tweaked mine a bit from the original idea. Here are my steps:

1.  I used spray adhesive to adhere the scrapbook paper to the top of the glass from the shadowbox frame to serve as the calendar background.
2.  I bought the 2" favor tins at Michael's (Wilton brand) and made a 2" circle template to cut out 25 circles to put on the inside of the top of each tin.
3.  I used spray adhesive to adhere the circles to the inside top of the tins.
4.  I found the number stickers at Hobby Lobby and put them on the outside of each tin.
5.  For the inside of each tin, I cut 25 more circles and taped them to the inside bottom of each tin.
6.  I found a posting on Pinterest that gave a listing of Bible verses to read each day during the Christmas season and wrote the verse location on a sticker that came with the tins. I placed the stickers on the circles for the inside of the tins.
7.  I simply used tape to adhere the verse circles and stickers to the inside of each tin. I could have used spray adhesive, but just didn't want to deal with the sticky mess that it can sometimes be.
8.  The original blog post about this calendar said to adhere the background scrapbook paper to a sheet of metal and glue magnets onto the back of each tin to get the tins to stick to the board. I didn't want to go this route so decided to use Velcro. I bought a package of small Velcro rectangles, cut them in half, and stuck them to the background and tin. The tins are so light that they will stay on the board with just the Velcro and it will be easy to take the tins off and on each day if needed.

I'm so proud of this project! It really wasn't that hard or time-consuming to make and using 40% off coupons and catching sales helped keep the price down! I'll try following it this year, but realize it might be a little bit lost on Lucy. Perhaps next year, though!

Gramma Ward and I

Last weekend we went to Omaha, Nebraska, to see my grandparents and other family members. My birthday was November 7 and my Grampa's birthday was November 9, so we celebrated together. One of the highlights of the trip for me was taking a picture with my Gramma.

I took the picture myself holding the camera out in front of us, so I guess you could call it a selfie. Each time I've seen her for the past SEVERAL years we've taken a picture together like this. It's so much fun to me and I know she enjoys it, too. :)

Dog People

I think it's safe to say that I (and especially Ross) am not a dog person. I like dogs, but don't really care to pet them much and I really don't like them jumping up on me. I don't want to smell like dog and I don't want the dog to possibly tear my clothes or scratch my legs with its jumping.

I was reminded of all of this just this morning when I had to go to a meeting at someone's house. I had never been to this house before and didn't know she had a dog. I became keenly aware of this the minute I rang the doorbell and heard the barking dog on the other side of the door. I wish I could tell you my first thought was, "Oh boy, a dog for me and Lucy to play with!" but that was definitely not the case! It was more along the lines of, "Oh crap, she has a dog. That means the dog is going to be barking and jumping up on me and Lucy and get its slobber all over us." Thankfully, only about half of my thoughts came true.

The dog did not stop barking for the first five minutes we were there. I was thoroughly annoyed by this but Lucy didn't seem to mind. She loves animals, so the dog was very exciting to her. I'm usually pretty good at pretending to like dogs like this and humor the dog by petting it, but today I was just not in the mood! I tried to ignore the dog, but it kept staring up at me and barking, as if it knew I was ignoring it on purpose. I finally gave in and gave him a little pet and that seemed to shut him up for a bit, at least until the next person came in the door.

What probably bothered me the most about the dog wasn't the dog itself, but the fact that the owner didn't do a single thing to calm the dog down. She was completely oblivious to the dog running around barking so much and jumping up on everyone who came in the door. This is what frustrates me the most about dog people - they just don't get that not everyone is as excited about their dog as they are. I realize that most dog people treat their dogs as family, or more so like their children, and that's fine. I can't relate to it at all, but to each his own. What is not fine, though, is their complete oblivion to others disinterest in their dogs! I don't expect people who come to my house to be super excited to see Lucy and constantly play with her and give her attention. I realize that not everyone is a kid person like I'm not a dog person.

Ross and I have had countless conversations about these dog people. It just frustrates us to no end that people don't realize we are not into their dogs like they are. In fact, one time we had dinner at a couple's house who we hardly knew at all. We were going on a church ski trip and carpooling with them so had dinner to get to know them a bit before our trip. No exaggeration - their dog had its head in my lap almost the whole time we were eating dinner. They knew the dog was there but didn't do anything about it.

Oh how I wish dog people would be a little more self-aware and not expect everyone to love their dog as much as they do.

She's Advanced

At a recent MOPS meeting, I was talking with some of the ladies about the developmental things our kids are doing now. A few of us have kids roughly the same age (18-24 months) and one of the topics we discussed was talking. One lady was asking how much our kids were talking because she was concerned that her son wasn't saying very much right now. One lady said that her girl talks a lot and followed that statement up with, "but she's advanced for her age."

I laughed to myself when I heard "she's advanced" and thought about it for the rest of the day. I was in no way making fun of her and she did not say it in a bragging way at all. She was just simply stating a fact about her daughter. It made me laugh because I wondered how many of us parents think our kids are "advanced," when in reality, they are doing exactly what they should (and nothing more) for their particular age. This lady's child very well could be advanced for her age, but I'd venture to guess there's a bit of bias in that statement!

I know I'd like to think Lucy is advanced for her age by all of the words she says, what she understands, the activities she does, can walk up and down the stairs so well, and so many other talents of hers. However, I don't want to overlook the fact that she's maybe just right-on, developmentally, where she should be for 18 months old. I'm sure, though, that my Mom would completely disagree with me. I know she thinks Lucy is "advanced." :)

Lucy Language

Lucy has really started talking a lot over the last month and it's so much fun! Some of her words are said very clearly, but others are very hard to understand. Sometimes I feel so bad because I know she's saying something "important" to her, but I have no clue what it is! In fact, there's one word that Ross and I cannot figure out at all. It sounds like "bucktooth" but we know it's not that and have gone through several ideas of what it could be but can't figure it out.

It is so cute when she talks. Often times, she will walk up to us and spew off whatever she's saying and it's like she is really telling a story to us, but in Lucy Language. We just reply and pretend like we know what she's talking about. I've been around lots of my friends' kids when they were at this beginning to talk stage and I could never make out what they were saying, but the kids' parents didn't miss a beat and could tell you exactly what their kids were saying. I somewhat marveled at this wondering how they could figure it out.

Now, though, I'm at that stage and can tell you (probably 95% of the time) what Lucy is saying, even if it doesn't exactly sound like it should. When you're around her all day, everyday, you just learn her and her words. I was telling a friend this story the other day and how it's fun to now understand her when others can't. She agreed and said it's neat, almost like we have our own little way of communicating that no one else has with her. I've thought about that so much and love this idea! It's like we're in our own little secret club with our own secret language!

Las Vegas: Grand Canyon

Ross and I took a quick vacation a few weeks ago to Las Vegas. During the summer we decided a vacation would be great and thought about California or Las Vegas. If we went to California, we'd go to the beach, but the beach did not sound fun at 5 months pregnant, so we opted for Las Vegas. Neither of us had been to Las Vegas before and we'd always talked about going and thought why not. We figured it would be a while before we would get to go on vacation again and also treated this as an early 5-year anniversary present to ourselves. Our 5-year anniversary will be next April, just about 2 months after Molly will be born...not the perfect time for a vacation!

I really wanted to go to the Grand Canyon while in Las Vegas. It's about a 4.5 hour drive from Las Vegas and I thought that we couldn't pass up that opportunity. We were so close, relatively speaking! We didn't want to spend a whole entire day driving and Ross found an airplane tour we could take that would fly us over the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon in a total of 4 hours. We thought this was a great idea and decided to go for it.

A shuttle service picked us up at our hotel Sunday at noon and took us to an airport about 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas where we got checked in and had to wait a bit for our flight. The plane we flew on was a small, 20-seater plane. Ross and I were in the very back row and I was very happy to see how big the plane windows were. I was afraid they might be small like regular plane windows, but they were a very good size.

The plane took off and right away I could tell we were in for a long flight, even though it was supposed to last only 1 hour. There was quite a bit of turbulence and I was scared right off the bat. It almost felt like the plane was just going to drop out of the air at times. It was definitely not a smooth, steady flight like a commercial airline. We flew over the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead then made our way to the Grand Canyon.

It was so neat to see the Grand Canyon from the air, however my stomach didn't quite agree with that. The turbulence got to me and I ended up throwing up in the little airplane barf bag. I'm so glad that thing was there! I've always wondered what it would be like to throw up in one of those things and now I know! That was not fun at all, but I did feel a little better after the fact, but the way back was still rough. Ross didn't feel so great himself, but was able to keep everything in! It did make me feel better that the girl sitting in front of Ross threw up, too. :)

Overall, it was worth it to me. I loved seeing the Grand Canyon and it was from such a different perspective that I would have gotten had we driven there. Enjoy my pictures!
